Our Story

“But Portugal has a peaceful feel about it. I sit on the terrace overlooking the vineyard there and I feel cut off from the world. You need that sort of thing." Cliff Richard

In a world where more is more, LXGS strives to slow things down a bit. It is a passion project with the goal of connecting others to what makes Portugal so special. We met in Lisbon (Rita's hometown) as roommates while Paulo was studying abroad. After a year long friendship something clicked and we suddenly found each other. Years later we got married in Central Park, moved to New York and have been loving it ever since.

For some time we’d been looking for an outlet to express our shared love for the country that brought us together. It wasn’t until a road trip out West though that the proverbial apple hit us on the head. While driving through small towns along the countryside we kept passing by these wonderful little general stores. Right away we loved the idea of a modern day general store as a platform to share the unique diversity and character of Portugal. And the ‘LX’, well that is short for Lisbon, the city where our love began and the city that is emblematic of a new Portugal, one that doesn’t hide from the rest of the world.

Portugal has been experiencing something of a renaissance, reimagining itself while keeping true to its heritage. For us, the best part has been discovering a country we thought we knew. There’s no better way to get to know a place than through its artists. Brands that don’t just represent a product, but a larger identity, a passion that is shaping the country in new ways and defining what the future will look like. So we’re on the lookout for pieces that speak to us, that speak to a feeling, because we think everyone could use a little Portugal in their lives.

We hope you’ll fall for Portugal in the same way we have and if you ever find yourself in that neck of the woods we’re always happy to help with any recommendations. Thanks for stopping by and welcome to our little adventure, enjoy!
